Stewart RIVER

Location – Two Harbors, MN

Minnesota Trout Unlimited (MNTU) hired the North State Environmental team to provide
comprehensive design build services to implement 1,817 feet of stream restoration on Stewart River as
well as development of a comprehensive habitat restoration plan for remaining high priority sites in the
Stewart Creek watershed. MNTU oversaw the project which was funded by Lessard-Sams Outdoor
Heritage Council through the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and the Minnesota
Legislature. On this project, MNTU also worked with Gitche Gumee Chapter of Trout Unlimited (GGTU). .
The upper 1,222 feet of work included a new location restoration reach as well as a lower enhancement
reach. In-stream structures employed on this project include rock j-hooks with toe wood, boulder
clusters, toe wood, rock cross vanes, rock/wood cross vanes, and habitat boulders. The project was
completed in 2017.
